Indoor Courts in Kandy: Badminton, Basketball, and How to Book

If you play in Kandy, the useful question is not whether a court exists. It is which hall is open, what the hour costs, and whether your shoes are allowed on the floor. This guide is for players who want badminton, basketball, or a small-sided game around Kandy without guessing from a group chat. The public facts come from the Kandy Municipal Council booking pages. The Muruthalawa option comes from that venue’s own site.
You can also look up partner venues on Sportizza when a court has published slots. The council stadium runs a separate booking site and collects its own fee there. Treat that queue as different from a booking you confirm on Sportizza.
🏸 The public hall on Peradeniya Road
The public indoor hall is the Kandy Municipal Council Indoor Stadium on Peradeniya Road, Kandy, post code 20000. The council contact page lists the main phone as +94 81 222 2322, the email info@eserveis.kandy.mc.gov.lk, parking on site, and a bus stop about 150 metres away on the same road. Hours on that page run from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday.
The booking homepage lists these starting rates:
- Badminton: 5 courts with wooden flooring, from LKR 750 an hour.
- Basketball: 1 court, from LKR 5,000 an hour.
- Table tennis: 10 tables, from LKR 600 an hour.
- Volleyball: 1 court, from LKR 2,500 an hour.
“From” means a starting price on the council site. It can change, and an evening slot may not match a screenshot from last month. Open the booking page on the day you plan to play and read the figure next to that court.
Badminton is the practical default for a foursome. Five courts give you a better chance than the single basketball floor. Basketball at LKR 5,000 an hour is a full-court hire, not a fee per person. Ten players splitting that starting rate land near LKR 500 each, before any extra time. Four badminton players splitting LKR 750 land under LKR 200 each. Agree the split in the chat before anyone pays, so the organiser is not left covering the court.

Volleyball and table tennis share the same building if the group wants a change of game. Most weeknight requests still start with badminton or basketball, so price those two first. The homepage also lists other activities. Check that page rather than assuming the hall is only rackets and hoops.
👟 Rules that will cost you if you skip them
The council terms page is what decides whether you keep the court. A few rules match in the English, Sinhala, and Tamil text. Follow those.
The stadium and the gym are open from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and closed on Poya days. If your usual night falls on a Poya, book another date. Do not travel across town and hope the shutter is up.
Hourly bookings can be made up to 7 days from the day you open the system. A booking for the whole venue has to be made at least 14 days ahead. For a normal game after work or after lectures, the 7-day window is the one that matters. Evening hours disappear first, because offices, schools, and the Peradeniya Road commute all let out in the same stretch. Look earlier in the week if you want a fixed night.
Leave when the slot ends. The terms add LKR 500 for every 5 minutes you stay over. A group that plays “one more point” for a quarter of an hour can add a serious extra charge. Set an alarm for 10 minutes before the end and use that time to finish the game and clear the court.
Badminton courts allow a maximum of 10 players. Table tennis tables allow a maximum of 4. The terms do not publish a basketball headcount, so ask the desk if you are bringing a long bench of substitutes.
Non-marking indoor shoes are mandatory, and the terms require suitable sports clothes. Outdoor soles mark a wooden badminton floor. Food and drinks stay outside the hall. Smoking and alcohol are prohibited on the premises. The council says it is not liable for injuries, or for lost and stolen bags, so keep valuables with someone who is sitting out.
A refund of the booking fee is available only if you cancel at least 3 days, meaning 72 hours, before the booked date. After that, the terms say the fee is not returned.
Read the deposit lines twice before you pay for a full-hall hire. On the same terms page, the English text and the Sinhala text do not match on the security deposit or on the extra-hour fee for a full-venue booking. The hourly overtime of LKR 500 per 5 minutes does match across those languages. For anything bigger than a normal court hour, confirm the figure with the stadium office before you transfer money.
If you pay the council offline, the terms say you first collect a receipt from the indoor stadium office and then pay the Kandy Municipal Council Shroff. That payment flow belongs to the council. It is not a payment page on Sportizza.
🚗 A court in Muruthalawa for small-sided play
The municipal hall lists badminton, basketball, table tennis, volleyball, and other indoor activities. It does not list futsal or indoor cricket. For a small-sided game, Kandy Futsal publishes its own site.
The site gives the address as No. 83/D, Dehigama North, Muruthalawa, Kandy, the phones 0812 412 512 and 0777 626 282, and the email futsalkandy@gmail.com. Muruthalawa is not the town centre. If the group is meeting near the lake or at the Peradeniya Road stadium, add travel time before you promise a 6.30 start.
Under the indoor football heading, the Kandy Futsal homepage lists LKR 2,000 off-peak and LKR 2,500 at peak. Players on Sportizza book that small-sided game as futsal. The same site has a separate indoor cricket page. Other hourly prices appear on the homepage, and the public text does not label every one of them clearly, so match the rupee figure to the exact court before you leave. The venue says it has parking, a changing room, and a cafeteria. Check the site on the day. A cached rate is not a promise.
📅 Hold the hour before the group chat does
Use the same order whether you are on the council site or calling Muruthalawa.
- Pick one sport and one date. A vote of “badminton or basketball, Thursday or Friday” is how the slot goes while the chat is still talking.
- Count the real headcount. Badminton at the municipal hall stops at 10 players. A basketball hour is priced as a court, so decide the split before you confirm.
- Book inside the window. For the municipal stadium that is 7 days for an hourly court. Weeknights after 5.00 p.m. are the tight ones.
- Check the Poya calendar before you lock a monthly game. The municipal stadium is closed on those days.
- Pack non-marking shoes, water you will leave outside the hall, and the booking receipt or reference. The terms keep food and drink out of the stadium.
- Arrive with enough time to change and start on the dot. Overtime at the municipal hall is billed in 5-minute blocks.
If someone new is organising, send the council terms link. A voice note will miss the Poya closure or the shoe rule.
🔗 Find a Kandy court on Sportizza
Sportizza is a marketplace for sports arenas in Sri Lanka. It does not replace the municipal stadium’s own site. Use it when you want to compare partner venues that have listed a court, including around Kandy when a venue has published a page. Listings change, and a hall that has not listed will not appear. This guide does not promise a fixed number of Kandy courts on Sportizza.
The player path is short. Search arenas, choose the sport and the area, then pick consecutive free slots on one court and one date. When you confirm, you get a reference id to bring with you. Guests enter a name and a mobile number and confirm an SMS one-time code. If you already have an account, you skip that step.
The amount can be shown on the confirmation screen. There is no card payment inside Sportizza checkout. The venue records the payment later, in cash, by card at the venue, by online transfer, or another method they accept. Ask how that venue wants to be paid before you travel, the same way you would ask the council about the Shroff.
Kandy already has a public indoor hall with a published price list, and a Muruthalawa court for small-sided play. Pick the sport, read this week’s rate, and book inside the window. When you want to see which partner courts are listing slots, find and book a court on Sportizza.
